Wow, great find!

Wow. The three worst publicly performed drum solos in history all in one song.

So sad that Mervyns went out of business.

scifijazznik #5 3:11 PM Wednesday, Jul 28, 2010 Reply

....and they did it all without the slightest hint of irony.

So that's where Gilligan got his shirts.

I'm pretty sure that's Desi Arnez Jr. doing that second drum solo, with all the fast, annoying camera switches.

Oh, duh. It's in the video title.

I find it hard to believe, but maybe they don't understand how to play over a jazzy feel?

I notice that they wisely put him up front.

For the first few seconds I thought it was a cover of Edgar Winters "Frankenstein"..

Now, there's your Inaugural Ball band right there.

The tune is called "Topsy", an old jazz standard.

Anybody can play a Moog Modular. It's just a keyboard. I'd be a lot more impressed if I saw him tweak the patch.

I'm drunk and that made me laugh really hard. I don't know why.

Reminds me of Synthesizer Patel

It looks like something from Sesame Street, but then,

"these bastards are always stealing synthesizers"

Donny is actually a technical genius. Installed an API console largely by himself in his teens, and driving force behind DOD (Donny Osmond Designed) guitar pedals. Anyone who cares check "Crazy Horses." Apparently they had to petition the elders for an allownace to rock on "just one song." The elders relented but told them that they could only rock for "just one riff."

not much in the way of a high water mark, but there you go.

After this show, the band for a 3-week engagement at the Mos Eisley Cantina

The drumming at the beginning made me think this was going to be some sort of avant-garde synth composition played by the most unlikely ensemble. What I got was much more bizarre, much, much more bizarre.

The ol' Wikipedia entry on DOD disagrees with your allegation connecting them to Donny. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOD_Electronics

I had to look. I still have a DOD distortion pedal somewhere that I bought in, like, 1989. The FX57. In fact, I think I have two of them. God knows why.

Um . . . no.

At no time in any Osmond's career did anyone have to "petition the elders" about anything. (Just as much as Madonna doesn't get clearance from the Pope on anything.) Just another stereotyping urban legend. And while they're not particularly known for "rocking" anything at all, a listen to any of their albums will show "riffs" and tunes that kick at least as much as "Crazy Horses". Just without the goofy "horse" noises. I played in a cover band back in the late 70's that the Osmonds regularly hired to do Saturday dances at their condo complex (The Riviera) in Provo. The boys would occasionally come out and sit in and would shock us by doing 5-part vocals on the end bit of "Stairway to Heaven", and KILLING with "Come Together" and "Back in the USSR"!

And no, Donny didn't invent the DOD pedal, but he was indeed (and still is) quite the tech guy and in fact did single-handedly build an independent studio in that condo complex in Provo and in their TV studio in Orem in the late 70's.

Having worked in their studios in the late 70's and been around the family with other business dealings over the years, I've always had this opinion of the Osmonds: I've never cared for what they do in the way of entertainment. But dammit, they're all (except for Jimmy, maybe) immensely talented people and they WERE the best at what they did.

I agree...their music was not for me...but their professionalism always earned my respect.
And they did have their audience, no doubt about that.
Come to think on it, they never ever dis-respected that audience, either.
And that counts, for more than some realize or know.

Well said! I take exception though...Jimmy is equally talented as the rest of the Osmonds. They just shined in different areas! Jimmy is also a very wise businessman!

Donny, without a doubt is a superstar of talent...if people can just look past the image that the industry (tabloids and record label) placed on him!

And I also take exception to "WERE". They still ARE! :) Other than that, they still rock!...again if only people would look past the image they were given.

And as far as not liking what they did in way of entertainment, we are all entitled to what appeals to us in the way of music.

"...they never ever dis-respected that audience, either. And that counts, for more than some realize or know." All I can do is applaud and give that statement a standing ovation.
